September 2026 Google Ads Update – New Measurement Tools
Granular analysis and first look
Google Expands Its Measurement Toolkit
Google is giving advertisers more ways to strengthen the data feeding AI-powered campaigns and determine whether media investment is actually driving business growth. For advertisers working to improve tracking and reporting, Granular’s analytics and measurement experts can help identify gaps before poor data starts influencing campaign decisions.
Google’s September 10 measurement announcement builds on measurement updates introduced earlier in 2026, with new capabilities spanning Data Manager, enhanced conversions, Google Ads reporting and Meridian.
The common thread is clear: better automation increasingly depends on better inputs, while better budget decisions require evidence that goes beyond platform attribution.
Data Manager Is Connecting More First-Party Signals
Google is integrating Data Manager directly into Google Analytics and Display & Video 360, giving advertisers another way to manage and activate first-party data across Google’s advertising ecosystem.
Enhanced conversions are also coming to GA and DV360. According to Google, advertisers using enhanced conversions see an average 11% increase in Search conversions compared with standard conversion imports.
The Data Manager API is now universal as well. Built around the IAB Tech Lab’s Event and Conversions API standard, it is designed to make customer-data connections easier to manage across advertising platforms.
New diagnostics can also flag data problems before they begin affecting campaign performance.
What Advertisers Should Watch
More integrations do not automatically mean better measurement. Advertisers should still confirm that:
- Conversion actions represent meaningful business outcomes.
- CRM and offline data are being passed consistently.
- Enhanced conversions are configured correctly.
- Duplicate or conflicting data sources are not inflating reporting.
- Customer data is collected and activated with appropriate permissions.
The value of these updates depends heavily on the quality of the underlying measurement setup.
Google Ads Adds a Data Strength Uplift Metric
One of the most practical additions is the new Data Strength Uplift Metric in Google Ads.
Google says the metric calculates additional conversions recovered through an advertiser’s first-party data setup. This should give marketers a clearer way to quantify the reporting benefit of investments such as stronger tagging and customer-data connections.
Google reports that advertisers using Google tag gateway see an average 14% conversion uplift, with the average exceeding 20% for Demand Gen campaigns.
Those benchmarks should not be treated as expected results for every account. The more useful application will be monitoring whether improvements to an individual advertiser’s measurement infrastructure actually recover additional observable conversions.
It is also important to distinguish this metric from incrementality. Recovering more conversions improves measurement completeness; it does not by itself prove that advertising caused those conversions.
Meridian Gets Faster and More Causal
Google is also expanding Meridian, its open-source marketing mix modeling platform, with improvements designed to make advanced measurement easier to build and validate.
Agentic Tools Assist With Model Building
New agentic capabilities can help users audit data quality, identify errors and guide model development. Google has also made backend improvements intended to make Meridian analyses run faster.
For sophisticated measurement teams, this could reduce some of the manual work required to build and troubleshoot marketing mix models.
Brand Signals Can Be Included in Models
Meridian can now incorporate brand-related signals such as Branded Google Query Volume.
This gives advertisers another way to evaluate the longer-term contribution of upper-funnel investments such as video and television, where the full impact may not appear in immediate platform conversion reporting.
Meridian GeoX Is Now Generally Available
Meridian GeoX, Google’s open-source framework for geographic experiments, is now generally available globally.
Geo experiments can help advertisers compare test and control markets to estimate whether advertising generated incremental business outcomes that would not otherwise have occurred.
GeoX results can also be incorporated into Meridian models, helping marketers calibrate modeling assumptions with experimental evidence.
Why This Google Ads Measurement Update Matters
Google is increasingly separating measurement into two related questions:
- Are we capturing performance accurately? Data Manager, enhanced conversions and stronger tagging help answer this.
- Did advertising actually cause additional results? GeoX experiments and Meridian modeling are designed to address this broader question.
Advertisers need both.
AI-powered bidding can only optimize toward the information it receives. At the same time, strong attribution inside Google Ads does not necessarily prove that the same conversions would not have happened without advertising.
The strongest measurement strategies will combine reliable conversion tracking, first-party business data, experimentation and broader modeling rather than expecting one report to provide every answer.
What Advertisers Should Do Next
Start by reviewing the measurement foundation already supporting your campaigns.
Prioritize:
- Audit first-party data connections: Confirm website, app, CRM and offline signals are reaching the intended platforms.
- Review enhanced conversions: Validate setup and monitor whether match quality and conversion coverage improve.
- Watch the Data Strength Uplift Metric: Use it to evaluate measurement improvements rather than as proof of incremental advertising performance.
- Identify incrementality questions: Determine which major budget decisions could benefit from a controlled experiment.
- Evaluate Meridian based on business complexity: Advanced MMM and geo-testing will generally provide the most value when advertisers have sufficient scale, historical data and cross-channel investment.
Key Takeaways
- Data Manager is expanding into Google Analytics and DV360.
- Enhanced conversions are being added to GA and DV360.
- The Data Manager API is now universal and includes new diagnostics.
- Google Ads is introducing a Data Strength Uplift Metric to estimate additional conversions recovered through first-party data.
- Meridian is adding agentic modeling assistance and support for brand signals.
- Meridian GeoX is now generally available globally.
- Advertisers should distinguish better conversion recovery from true incrementality measurement.
Google is continuing to make measurement a core input to AI-powered advertising rather than simply a reporting layer after campaigns run.
For PPC advertisers, the most immediate opportunity is strengthening first-party data and conversion tracking before feeding more signals into automated bidding. For larger organizations, Meridian and GeoX add another layer by helping determine whether advertising is creating incremental demand and how those findings should influence future budget decisions.
Better AI does not eliminate the need for measurement discipline. It makes reliable data, controlled testing and clear business outcomes even more important.
