Granular analysis and first look

Google is pushing AI deeper into the shopping journey just as retailers prepare for the holiday rush. For ecommerce advertisers, that makes strong product data and a well-managed eCommerce PPC strategy even more important as shoppers move between Search, YouTube, AI experiences and checkout. Google’s latest commerce updates focus on helping merchants understand AI visibility, answer shopper questions and reduce friction on the path to purchase.

AI Performance Insights Expand in Merchant Center

Google’s AI performance insights are now available for eligible Merchant Center accounts in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the U.S. The report shows how brands and products appear for conversational shopping queries in AI Mode and AI Overviews, including share of voice, popular attributes, top terms and shopper intent.

For retailers, this creates a new way to identify gaps in product information. If shoppers frequently ask about an attribute your feed does not adequately cover, that insight can inform product titles, descriptions and other feed attributes.

One important limitation: the report currently covers organic AI traffic, such as free listings, and does not include paid Google Ads traffic. Advertisers should treat this as a product-data and visibility signal rather than a direct measurement of paid media performance.

Business Agent Is Coming to YouTube Ads

Google is also inviting eligible U.S. retailers to a beta that brings Business Agent directly into YouTube ads. Shoppers can ask product questions and receive tailored information while remaining within the YouTube experience.

This could make YouTube more useful further down the funnel. Rather than relying on an ad to answer every potential question, retailers may eventually be able to give shoppers an interactive research experience within the ad itself.

For advertisers participating in the beta, it will be worth monitoring whether these conversations improve qualified traffic, purchase intent and downstream conversion behavior.

Google Expands Universal Commerce Protocol Capabilities

Google is also expanding its Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP, integration through Merchant Center. UCP is an open standard designed to let AI agents and commerce systems work together, including checkout experiences in AI Mode and Gemini.

The Merchant Center integration is gradually rolling out in the U.S., with Australia and Canada expected to follow in 2027. New capabilities include cart transfer to a merchant’s website and enhanced checkout-flow testing.

The broader implication is that product discovery and checkout may increasingly happen across Google experiences instead of following the traditional ad-click-to-website path. Retailers should make sure product, shipping, return and checkout information stays accurate as these integrations expand.

Product Feed Optimization Matters Even More

Despite the new AI features, Google’s most actionable recommendation is familiar: keep your Merchant Center feed accurate and complete.

Google says merchants that adopt its core feed best practices see an average 5% increase in conversions the following month. The company is also encouraging retailers to provide additional data through video links, loyalty information and new conversational attributes.

Conversational attributes can provide AI systems with information that may not fit neatly into traditional feed fields. Available options include:

  • Product questions and answers
  • Related documents and manuals
  • Related products and accessories
  • Item group titles
  • Variant information
  • Product popularity rankings

These attributes are optional and supplement existing Merchant Center product data rather than replacing it. Google recommends adding them through a supplemental data source or existing product data setup.

For brands with large or complex catalogs, this is another reason to prioritize Shopping feed management. Product data is no longer only influencing traditional Shopping placements; it is increasingly supplying the context Google’s AI experiences use to understand and recommend products.

What PPC Advertisers Should Do Before the Holidays

Retailers do not need to overhaul their strategy because of one announcement. Instead, these updates reinforce several areas worth reviewing before peak holiday demand:

  • Audit Merchant Center product data: Look for missing attributes, weak descriptions, outdated availability and incomplete product information.
  • Review AI performance insights: Eligible retailers can identify conversational search themes and attributes where their products have limited visibility.
  • Test conversational attributes: Start with products that require more explanation or typically generate detailed pre-purchase questions.
  • Evaluate richer product assets: Video links and loyalty information may create additional opportunities across Google’s shopping experiences.
  • Watch emerging checkout options: UCP is still rolling out, but ecommerce teams should understand how agent-assisted checkout could affect measurement and customer experience.
  • Consider the YouTube beta: Eligible U.S. retailers with meaningful YouTube investment may have an opportunity to test Business Agent within ads.

Key Takeaways

  • AI performance insights are expanding across five countries, but currently measure organic AI visibility rather than paid ad traffic.
  • Google is testing Business Agent directly inside YouTube ads for eligible U.S. retailers.
  • UCP is expanding with cart-transfer and checkout-testing capabilities.
  • Conversational attributes give retailers another way to supply richer product context to Google’s AI systems.
  • High-quality Merchant Center feeds remain the foundation behind both traditional Shopping performance and emerging AI commerce experiences.

Google’s holiday commerce updates show where the shopping experience is heading: more conversational discovery, richer product information and fewer barriers between research and purchase.

For PPC teams, the immediate priority is not chasing every new AI feature. It is making sure the fundamentals are ready for them. Accurate feeds, detailed product data, reliable measurement and thoughtful testing will put retailers in a better position as Google connects ads, AI discovery and commerce more closely together.
